Economics of Educational Equity
Course Rationale
Justification for the financing of public education can be found in the esteem in which formal education is held in a community. The study of economics will tell us not only the value of education to a community but also how efficiently educational services are being produced and how equitably they are distributed among users in the community. In the context of demands for greater accountability in education across the nation, it is critical that educational leaders have a good grasp of the costs of producing educational services, the weight of the tax burden that provides the major resource for education, alternatives in the use of scarce financial resources available for education, the extent of equity in the allocation educational resources, and the benefits that are being earned by the community from its investment in education. This course examines these issues in the financing of education and examines ways to improve efficiency in education.
